The longest post in blog history!

I keep putting this off b/c these posts take a loooong time (like hours and hours!) as I really have to try to hash out what I know to be true from the bible and what the world is telling me I must do for my soon to be "multi-ethnic" family. It is good for me to do because it challenges my assumptions and sets me on a firmer foundation of the sufficiency of Christ once I get done. So I continue on.

Just a recap - White priveledge is defined as an invisible pack of assets I possess because I am white. It is suggested by some social workers that we are to specifically teach our adopted children about this phenomenon. In a previous post I made the case that I think it IS right to proactively be preparing our child for harsh treatment they might encounter based on their race, however, I am not in full agreement with their proposed solutions. I don't trudge through this to lecture to anyone, but instead I do it with a heart that wants to love my little one and not do him or her harm. You are walking beside me in this not following behind : ) Thanks for bearing with me...this is getting to be a weighty topic!

I'm honestly not sure where to start in organizing my thoughts so I will just start by listing what I know to be true about ALL people and see where that leaves us.

  • "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." Gen 1:27 Everything in creation reflects who God is to some degree, but humans were given the honor of showing His character more clearly. Examples would include our relationships and capacities that separate us from other creatures such as reasoning, emotion, morality, language, etc. Therein lies the worth of ALL human beings of ALL races. Much of the world claims that morally we are to preserve life and treat people equally, but those who reject God have no concrete standard. So the bar moves and an answer to what is moral changes depending on the personal values of each person - this is called moral relativism. Moral relativism has no firm foundation. If you carry forth the logic of moral relativism it is easily found to be flawed. The Bible sets forth a clear standard for the worth of all people.

  • "From now on , therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation." 2 Cor 5:16-17 Flesh here is synonymous with standards that the world may come up with (gender, race, disability to name a few). The phrase "from now on" is referring to after the death and resurrection of Christ and the establishment of a new covenant between God and man. Here Paul is explaining that we are not to look at someone and judge them according to worldly standards but instead look at them as God sees them. Paul had seen Christ as a false Messiah according to the Pharisees standards, however, after becoming a recipient of the grace of salvation he affirms that he regards Christ this way no longer. In light of this verse we are to no longer regard ANYONE according to any standard EXCEPT that which the Lord has set, namely, that they are made in the image of the Lord and are thus to be valued simply for that reason.

  • "'Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?' And he (Jesus) said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Matt 22:34-38 If this isn't one that makes us run to the gospel for refuge I don't know what is! Have you EVER spent a minute where you have loved God with ALL your heart ALL your soul, and ALL your mind? Praise God for the provision of a savior that covers us with His righteousness that we through Him might be cleansed of our sins and be credited the perfect life the Christ lived. Perfect justice meets perfect love nowhere else but in the cross of Christ!

  • "If anyone says, 'I love God,' and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother." 1 John 4:20-21. The ax has been put into any argument for ANY kind of prejudice or bias against another person. It can't be justified. As Christians we MUST love our neighbor as ourself...even our enemies! (Rom 12:20, Matt 5:44-45)

  • "None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one." Romans 3:10-12 Essential to the foundation we are to build on in raising our multi-ethnic family amidst a fallen world. This child's mama and daddy are sinners. Their brother and sister are sinners. He or she is a sinner. The child that is kind to them at the park is a sinner. The lady who glares at us at the grocery store is a sinner. It is not to be an "us against them" fight where colors are even considered. The human race itself is unified perfectly in its sinfulness against a holy God. In my opinion people preoccupy themselves with drawing colored lines in an effort to escape their own sinfulness to the God who they have offended. Putting others down lifts myself up. It is much easier and also more entertaining to my prideful heart to stuff down that feeling that I need to be reconciled to something bigger - namely Christ.

  • "The heart is decietful above all things and desperately sick; who can understand it." Jeremiah 17:9 The reason for our depravity - a sick heart that decieves us from our need for reconciliation to God. A heart that refuses to obey and puts ourselves on the throne over the Lord and Author of Life. In answering how it is possible that anyone can be saved to eternal life Jesus answered, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." Matthew 19:26 This verse in particular continually reminds me of the state of my own heart. Though I (and all other believers) by the grace of God have been the recipient of a new heart (Ezek. 11:19-20, Matt 19:28, John 3:3,5,7 and Titus 3:5) I continue to sin. Knowing the true condition of our hearts enables us to walk humbly through this life, able to forgive others freely b/c of the great forgiveness shown to us by God. This will greatly affect how we recieve unkindness as we are reminded that the only thing we are truly deserving of is eternal punishment in hell. There is no expectation having the "right" to being treated well - it is ALL grace. There is no expectation to be given a comfortable life - ALL is grace. When looking into the eyes of unkindness that ALL my children will inevitably face simply by being alive in a fallen world this verse reminds us that those eyes are windows into our own hearts showing us how desperately wicked mankind is. I am guilty of having a wicked heart. There is NO room for being a good person in the gospel of Christ. Yet as a believer I can rejoice amidst my depravity that the Lord is able AND willing to save me!

Whoa, this is crazy long. It has helped me to lay a foundation for practically what it will look like to raise our child - which I will continue in another post. If you accomplished reading this then you are maybe just a bit less crazy than me.

Where oh where...

Where oh where...has she been? Since getting the email that told us to expect 2-3 more months of waiting it has been easier to just avoid my blog. It seems to make time go faster if I don't think about it. I will try to begin fighting the urge to ignore all things adoption because 1) i need to finish the whole "white priveledge" thing and 2) if i am to live to the hilt (see words to ponder) this time of waiting, then i need to search specifically for the Lord while WAITING and 3) I will lose all my readers if i write nothing. Thanks for hanging in there with us while we wait :)

Like I said before, nothing new on the adoption homefront except that every passing day is (Lord willing) a day closer to when we get to meet our new baby! I feel as though i am really searching for newsworthy items so bear with me if you think my news is lame-o. The pictures above are just some funny ones we've taken lately. "Princess" Juliana is reading a riveting story. The second pic was a mix of green candy and the usual Evan drool - it made for a very convincing dragon costume! The last pic we will just call GQ Evan - Ha! We are just getting over a long but mild icky nose and throat thing so we rejoiced in our healthy noses today :) Evan has been crazy funny lately. He likes to pretend to be a horse or a dog, or more often some strange combination of the two. This is really the first time he has ever initiated something imaginative so it has been fun to start seeing what is going on in that little man brain of his :) He has started to say the word ouch but it sounds like a really bad word that I won't elaborate on. We have had some funny Juliana-isms lately. She seems to be on a kick where she makes up words possibly just to see our response (?). There was one morning where I got really brave and sat Evan down to give him a haircut. He did well and after we were all cleaned up Juliana decided she needed to get in on the action. She asked Evan to hold still and began combing his hair with a very concerned look on her face. "Oh, Evan your hair is just so...so...sofacious. Yes, Evan your hair is (motherly clicking of the tongue) so sofacious" I don't even think I tried to stifle the giggles on this one so I simply asked "Is that good or bad that Evan's hair is sofacious?" Continuing to comb she simply replied, "It is really bad. It means it is crazy." There was also an afternoon where each kid had a baby they were taking care of and Juliana introduced me to the babies. Evan's baby was named Horsecatcher and Juliana's was a girl baby named Rob. It is really hard to look a three year old in the eye and tell her how beautiful her new little baby girl Rob is...but somehow I did it :) One afternoon while I set Juliana up at the table for afternoon snack I asked her if she thought I should go get Evan out of his bed to join her. She got a gleam in her eye and communicated her affection for her brother so eloquently as she said, "He's a sneaky headkeeper." This girl cracks me up!

Thankful for democracy

This picture cracked me up and I just had to post it somehow. It has nothing to do with adoption whatsoever. We went this morning to take advantage of my voting priveledges. It went well until we were heading out the door and Juliana was on the verge of tears saying, "But mommy, where is the new king? We didn't see him yet!" The little old ladies didn't seem as amused as I was. I love that Juliana talks so well for her age, however, it makes it a challenge when we come across something that her little 3 year old brain can't quite comprehend. In an effort to explain the election to her we likened it to choosing a king that will lead us. So, it made complete sense to her that after mommy chose who she wanted that we would get to see him. Sorry sweetie, not today. I am so often reminded by her how Jesus says we are to have faith like a little child.
  • Believing that we WILL someday see the things we can only read about now - and living that way.

  • Rejoicing wholeheartedly (with loud hoorays and dancing!) in things unseen.

  • Trusting completely what her momma and daddy tell her.
I can learn a lot from my kids for sure.

6 months of growing!

The pictures didn't show up in the order I intended. Being the tech wiz that I am, I am baffled at how to change the order of them :) I wanted to put up some pics of the kids from the beginning of the summer and at the end of summer so I could compare them. The first and last are from the beginning of summer and the middle two are from today. 6 months makes a big difference! It seems as though the fast forward button on life gets stuck in the on position the minute your first child is born. The minutes can roll by painfully slow when I am waiting for Craig to get home after a rough day with the kids, but truly time seems to slip away when I take a step back and look at the big picture. "...teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom." Psalm 90:12
There were no referrals given out in October for our agency. It is really hard to predict when we will recieve our referral. The best guess they can give us is January at the latest. We are not discouraged...our little one isn't ready for us yet and we must not be quite ready for them! I wish I had more adoption news for you, but we are held securely in a place where we have nothing to do but pray for this little one who we have not seen yet :) A good place to be considering the one who is listening.

He is praying for me

“If I could hear Christ praying for me in the next room, I would not fear a million enemies. Yet distance makes no difference. He is praying for me.”

—Robert Murray M’Cheyne, Robert Murray M’Cheyne, ed Andrew Bonar (Carlisle, PA: Banner of Truth: 1960), 179
...and He is praying for you to if you belong to Him! I pray this is an encouragement to your hearts as it was to mine.

All is grace

The Lord is ever present in this journey and has today closed a few doors for us in the financial aspect of this adoption. We received a note today in the mail that we were not awarded a grant from Shaohannah's Hope. I also received an email back regarding some questions I had about a new program at UNMC where they hook up pharmacists to work from their homes for rural hospital pharmacies...being a hospital pharmacist is something I love so I sent a few questions to the head of the program to see if it would be a good fit for us. It is the nature of pharmacy that even simply working 1 day/week would bring in significant income. It looks like the program requires you to work at least 20 hours per week which is more than I am willing/able to stretch myself right now. Maybe someday, but it is clearly not for us right now.

Where do we go from here? Often times when people pray they will ask, "Lord, what do I do? Could you please just give me a sign?" I remember doing this on more than one occasion. All this is done as we forget that the Lord has revealed His will to us in His word. We have just to look to the Bible to find what we are to do. It is not quite so mysterious as I used to make it :)

It is tempting to let myself wallow in discouragement.
"Why are you cast down, O my soul. and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God..." Psalm 42:11

This is what I know to be true tonight:

So far the Lord has NOT closed the door on the adoption, so we continue pursuing the work to which we feel called.

We still need approximately $5,000 for travel costs.

The Lord is able to supply all that we need.
"...for the world and its fullness are mine." Psalm 50:11

The Lord has sovereignly ordained that these opportunities NOT be available to us.
"Who is there who speaks and it comes to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it? Is it not from the Most High that both good and ill go forth?" Lam 3:37

We trust that the Lord has been kind to us in the place He has us.
"The Lord is righteous in all His ways and kind in all His works." Psalm 145:17

We are to rejoice in our God and the Salvation He has given.
"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thess 5:16-18

All is grace. We have been saved from the wrath of God, the wrath we richly deserved for our sins. Thank you Lord for your salvation in which we can rejoice even when worldly prosperity is absent.
"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the father, full of grace and truth...And from His fullness we have all received grace upon grace." John 1:14,16
